It was built for Hansheinrich von Wolf, a Saxon artillery officer who married a wealthy American and set up a thoroughbred stud on the property. The design came from Wilhelm Sander, whose Schwerinsburg, Heinitzburg and Sanderburg still stand in Windhoek. The style is historicism, the model a medieval fortress. Maltahöhe, the nearest town, lies about 72 kilometres to the north east.
The house outlasted all of it. Fully restored in 1991 and renovated again in 2014, it now works as a public museum and as accommodation with five rooms, run by Namibia Wildlife Resorts. We found no documented driving distance from Sesriem. If your route from Sesriem runs south or east, take Duwisib as a stage along the way rather than as an out and back trip.
